The future of building management is digital and photorealistic

Funding initiative KMU-innovativ: iDZ-2025

New technologies are reshaping how buildings and facilities are operated, maintained, and optimized.

Digital twins are the key to greater efficiency, transparency, and future-proofing. But traditional methods for creating digital models are often expensive, time-consuming, and too rigid to meet the industry’s evolving demands.

That’s where iDZ-2025 comes in – a research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. In collaboration with Technische Hochschule Nürnberg Georg Simon Ohm, we are making photorealistic digital twins more interactive, flexible, and cost-efficient than ever before.

High costs, limited scalability, and lack of interaction

Running buildings, maintaining facilities, and executing retrofit processes all require an accurate digital representation of reality. But current technologies like 3D laser scanning and traditional 3D reconstruction are often slow, expensive, and difficult to scale.

Even worse, they lack interactive capabilities—meaning that digital models are often static visualizations rather than fully integrated tools. Businesses struggle to enrich them with live data, videos, documents, or dashboards, limiting their usefulness in daily operations.

Reality checks, asset documentation, and maintenance workflows could be significantly more efficient with a smarter, more flexible, and photorealistic solution. But until now, high costs, complex technology, and rigid systems have made this impossible.

Photorealistic digital twins. Interactive, efficient, and fully immersive

By leveraging cutting-edge image-based computer graphics and computer vision, we are developing a new generation of digital twins. Our innovative approach enables fully interactive, walkable 3D models, compatible with XR technologies, using nothing more than standard camera systems.

Instead of relying on expensive laser scanners, we use a groundbreaking image synthesis process. This allows us to rapidly generate large-scale 3D environments that are visually consistent, immersive, and cost-effective.

The result? A more realistic, interactive, and scalable digital twin experience—with significantly lower technical and financial barriers.

A new level of digitalization. Photorealistic, future-proof, and ready to scale

Once the project is completed in 2025, this technology will be integrated into our Digital Twin Engine 4.0 – taking digitalization to the next level.

Our solution doesn’t just enhance visual quality and interactivity. It also streamlines daily operations, reducing time, costs, and complexity. Instead of a static building model, companies get a dynamic, interactive environment that makes inspections, maintenance, and optimizations easier than ever in real time.
